Biographical Note

John Hay Farnham was born on July 22, 1791 to William and Hannah Bliss Farnham in Newburyport, Massachusetts and was graduated from Harvard in 1811. He moved to Indiana in 1819, married Evelyn M. Leonard [Leanard] in Harrison County on May 3, 1821, and they had 4 children. They moved to Salem, Indiana so he could practice law in 1824. He gave a speech on July 4, 1826 asking that taxes be raised to provide for public schools. His speech did not please his fellow citizens but the community did forgive him.

He served as clerk of the Senate from 1822 to 1833. John was one of the founders of the Indiana Historical Society in 1830 and served as corresponding secretary. He had also been a teacher and newspaper editor. He, his wife and two children died of cholera in 1833. He is buried in Crown Hill Cemetery in Salem, Indiana.
