Scope and Contents
This collection contains several items related to the Service Men’s Club (SMC) of Indianapolis. Such items include a photograph of soldiers at the SMC in Indianapolis, a newspaper article about the SMC, an essay about the history of the club, a scrapbook of events at the SMC during the WWII, and a newsletter from the Army Air Force Headquarters Squadron thanking the SMC volunteers for their work. Also included in this collection are a Christmas card and a copy of the Republican Program Committee Report, in which the Republican Party evaluates its policies, positions, and decides on the direction it wants to move in.

Biographical Note
Katherine Atkins donated the materials in this collection, which relate to the Service Men's Clubs of Indianapolis. In May 1941, a club was opened on Wabash Street, with Dorothy Buschmann serving as director of the center. The purpose of the center was to provide servicemen a place to relax, have fun, and feel at home. The Servicemen’s
clubs provided sleeping accommodations, food, and entertainment. They also contained libraries, areas to write letters, and dance floors. The women who volunteered their time were to the centers were often mothers of soldiers. They offered their homes to servicemen during the holidays, baked cookies, and supplied whatever they could to help out the men in uniform.
