Biographical Note

Katherine Atkins donated the materials in this collection, which relate to the Service Men's Clubs of Indianapolis. In May 1941, a club was opened on Wabash Street, with Dorothy Buschmann serving as director of the center. The purpose of the center was to provide servicemen a place to relax, have fun, and feel at home. The Servicemen’s clubs provided sleeping accommodations, food, and entertainment. They also contained libraries, areas to write letters, and dance floors. The women who volunteered their time were to the centers were often mothers of soldiers. They offered their homes to servicemen during the holidays, baked cookies, and supplied whatever they could to help out the men in uniform.
