Scope and Contents

This collection includes two financial documents and two letters pertaining to the Adams/McDonald family, including A.J. McDonald, Mary E. McDonald, and Mary Jane McDonald in Carrolton, Hancock County and Elizabethtown, Bartholomew County in Indiana ranging from 1869 to 1936. There are also three Democratic voting tickets for state elections in Indiana circa 1851, 1876, and 1935.

Biographical Note

May Adams Arbuckle was born in Elizabethtown, Bartholomew County, Indiana on July 10, 1885. She was the daughter of William Dayton and Sara Elizabeth Adams and the third of five children. May worked as an elementary school teacher and principal in Bartholomew County for twenty-seven years. She married Ernest Arbuckle in Elizabethtown on February 6, 1919. She was heavily involved in the 4-H Clubs of Bartholomew County and was a member of the board of directors for the county library. She helped to form the Bartholomew County Historical Society, where she served either as president or director from 1930 to 1964. She was also a published poet and author. May died in Columbus, Indiana on August 19, 1864 and is buried in Springer Cemetery, Elizabethtown, Indiana.
