This collection includes two letters. and an accompanying typed transcript, from John C. Anderson in Murfreesboro and Chattanooga, Tennessee to his brother, James L. Anderson in La Porte, Indiana on January 15, 1863 and October 10, 1863, regarding army life and the battles at Murfreesboro and Chattanooga during the American Civil War.

Biographical Note
John C. Anderson served in Union army during the Civil War, fighting around Murfreesboro and Chattanooga, Tennessee in 1863.
His brother James Levi Anderson was born in Oswego, New York on March 9, 1823. He lived in La Porte, Indiana in 1860 with his wife June [Jane] and children, Emma, David and Edgar. Jane died in 1866. James Anderson married Hannah Burley Nov. 17, 1867 in New Buffalo, Michigan. In 1870, he lived in Kankakee Township, La Porte County, Indiana, with his second wife Hannah and two sons, David and Edgar. He died April 17, 1902 and is buried in Patton Cemetery in La Porte, Indiana.
