Scope and Contents

This collections contains letters (copy) written by Amory K. Allen to his wife during the Civil War. They were photo statically copied in 1935 by the Indiana State Library and were published in the Indiana Magazine of History in December of that same year. In these letters, Allen tells his wife about life as a soldier. In his last letter, he complains of a shoulder wound he received while serving in the Union Army. He also briefly mentions the death of President Lincoln, and how he had been pick pocketed while watching the funeral procession.

Biographical Note

Amory K. Allen was born in Iowa around 1831. Around 1850, he and his wife Mary moved to Harrison Township in Daviess County, Indiana. On June 7, 1861, he enlisted with the 14th Indiana Infantry, Company C. In December of 1863, Allen reenlisted with the same company. On June 6, 1864, he transferred to the 20th Indiana Infantry, Company B. By the end of his military career, Allen had been promoted to the rank of sergeant.
