Scope and Contents

The collection includes 44 original Civil War letters from Daniel F. Griffin to his wife, Mary Compton, in New Albany, Indiana, and photostat family letters from before the war. The collection also includes typed transcripts of 27 of his Civil War letters to his wife, as well as a notebook containing notes on regimental accounts and several hand drawn maps.

Biographical Note

Daniel F. Griffin was born September 20, 1833 in New Brunswick, Canada. Griffin moved to New Albany, Floyd County, Indiana prior to the U.S. Civil War. Griffin was a major and colonel in the 38th Indiana Regiment, serving in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Georgia (1861-1865) during the Civil War. Griffin died February 14, 1865 in New Harmony and is buried at Fairview Cemetery.
