This collection includes typed copies of newspaper articles from Phelix Adair in Madison, Indiana ranging from 1883 to 1910 regarding the Madison band in the Battle of Shiloh, history of industries along the Crooked Creek Valley, and William H. Rahe's service, as a young boy, to Colonel August Willich's German regiment during the American Civil War.

Biographical Note

Andrew Jackson Grayson, who wrote under the pseudonym Phelix Adair, was born in Decatur County, Indiana on December 26, 1838. The son of John Wren and Permelia (Cummins) Grayson; he was one of at least five children. Grayson began working for the Madison (Ind.) Courier at the age of twelve and eventually became a compositor and foreman. He enlisted as a sergeant in Company E, 6th Indiana Infantry Regiment on April 22, 1852 and was mustered out on August 2, 1861. He was commissioned as 1st lieutenant in Company D, 6th Indiana Infantry Regiment on September 20, 1861 and was mustered out on May 21, 1862. Grayson married Mathilda Laurence on Aug. 18, 1861 in Jefferson County, Indiana. They had four sons and two daughters: Laura, William, Frank, George. Lottie and Howard. Grayson died in Franklin, Indiana on July 22, 1913 and was buried in Springdale Cemetery, Madison, Indiana.
