Biographical Note

Alexander Abernathy (also spelled Abbernathy) served in the American Civil War, mustering into service as a private with the 21st Indiana Infantry, Company G in Indianapolis, Indiana on July 24, 1861. After contracting typhoid fever, he was discharged in October, 1862 on a surgeon's certificate of disability. After regaining his health, Abernathy volunteered to serve with Company M, Indiana 9th Calvary on December 31, 1863 with a rank of sergeant. He mustered out as a commanding sergeant on August 28, 1865 having served three years and five months.
