This collection comprises a photograph album with tintypes and carte de visite photographs from Mary Heinzerling in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1875 regarding portraits of family members and friends. The album is ornate and covered with green, velvet-like fabric. It has a painted panel of a woman from the waist up on the front and gold-impressed page edges. The album was given to Heinzerling as a Christmas present by George Miller in 1875.

Biographical Note

The person who owned the photograph album is most likely the following individual:

Mary Heinzerling was born to Georg Heinrich "Henry" (d. 1870) and Elizabeth (Kurtzrock) Heinzerling (1828-1913) on October 26, 1852 in Hesse, Germany. The family immigrated to the United States and moved to Tipton, Indiana by 1870. Heinzerling had several siblings: John, Anna, Henry G., Bertha, and William F. She was working as a domestic servant for the Elijah and Mary Halford family in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1870. She married another German immigrant, William Johanning, on March 9, 1880 in Indianapolis and they had 5 children: Clara L., Laura R., Mamie, Olive, and Walter. Mary Heinzerling Johanning died on January 11, 1951 and was buried in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis.
