Historical Note

In 1865, Governor Oliver P. Morton of Indiana requested that Indiana military officers who fought in the Union army during the U.S. Civil War to submit photographs of themselves for the compilation of photograph albums. He requested standard-size photographs (4 x 2.5 in.) with their signatures and their present rank "to perpetuate the remembrance of the officers of Indiana regiments." The albums were manufactured by John Edwin Potter in Pennsylvania, while the Executive Office of the State of Indiana compiled the photographs.
