Scope and Contents

This collection includes a transcript and audiotape reel from an oral history interview with Reverend James Miller, conducted by Thomas Krasean for the Indiana State Library on October 2, 1968, at Waugh, Boone County, Indiana. The interview covers his experiences in the Philippines during the Philippine-American War, life following the war, conversion and life as a preacher, and discusses the Ku Klux Klan and its effects on his ministry.

Biographical Note

Born on April 1, 1881, James Miller was 18 years old when he enlisted in Company B, 34th U.S. Volunteer Infantry in 1899. He fought in the Philippine-American War from 1899 to 1901. They had no guerrilla training, but they did have some scout training.

Miller's father and uncle were in the American Civil War. His father was in Company G, 37th Indiana Volunteers, and fought around Lookout Mountain, Chattanooga, Chickamauga, and Atlanta. He was wounded at the Battle of Stones River on the first day.

In Kansas, Miller married, was converted, and called into the ministry. He preached for 12 years in Grant, Wells, and Johnson counties, in Indiana. He and his wife had two daughters.
