Scope and Contents

The collection consists of the transcript and two ree-to-reel audiotapes from two oral history interviews with Randall Galvin, conducted by Susan Bell of the Indiana State Library on October 24, 1973 and May 9, 1975. In the first interview Galvin tells how he came to own the Black Curtain Dinner Theatre and how he dealt with the renovations. The second interview consists of detailed accounts of costs and expenses of operating the theatre, as well as advice for newcomers to the theatre business. There is also a folder with theatre ephemera and clippings circa 1970.

Biographical Note

Randall Galvin was born in Norfolk, Virginia. He attended Southport High School in Indianapolis, Indiana and Indiana University, completing a Masters of Theater Arts. He taught at a high school in Chevy Chase, Maryland and then at Butler University for one year before attending graduate school at the University of Iowa. After one semester at the University of Iowa, Galvin decided that his interest was more in theater than education and he returned to Indianapolis. Galvin opened the first dinner theatre in Indianapolis in July of 1967, named the Black Curtain Theatre located at 21st and Talbott Street.

He married Karen Lucas from Lebanon, Indiana and the couple had two children, Roxanne and Matthew Randolph.
