Evans Wilkins Cottman was born in the Irvington area of Indianapolis, Indiana in 1902. He was graduated from Butler University with bachelor's and master's degrees in biochemistry. After graduation, he worked as a high school science teacher in Madison, Indiana. After several summer trips to the Bahamas, Cottman purchased ten acres of land on Crooked Island and decided to lived there permanently. He met his wife Viola, a resident of Abaco Islands, Bahamas, in 1944 at Marsh Harbour, Abaco Islands, Bahamas.

Sometime in the late 1940s the Bahamian government made Evans Cottman an "unqualified practitioner" of medicine, since medical doctors were so scarce in the Out Islands. Cottman later received training at Nassau Hospital. After this training he moved his family to Marsh Harbour. Evans Cottman died in February 1976 and was survived by his wife and daughter.
