This collection contains a transcript and an audiotape reel of an oral history interview with Frank A. Ashworth, conducted by Thomas Krasean for the Indiana State Library Oral History Project on September 2, 1968. In the interview, Ashworth discusses his military service and homesteading in Kansas.

Biographical Note

Frank A. Ashworth was born July 5, 1883 in Mattoon, Illinois. Ashworth served several years with the United States Army in Cuba, the Philippines and Puerto Rico from 1897 to 1902 and with the 22nd Battery of the U.S. Army at Fort Douglas, Utah from 1902 to 1904. He was the longest surviving veteran of the Spanish-American War. After leaving the army, he worked as a postman, retiring in 1931. He was a member of the Greencastle American Legion, the Earl Fisk Spanish American War Camp No. 48 and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodge. He married Lottie C. Cox in 1910 and together they had one son. Ashworth died January 12, 1980 in Miami, Florida.
