Scope and Contents

This collection contains one audiotape reel and a transcript of an oral history interview with Mildred I. Arnold, conducted by Susan Bell of the Indiana State Library on February 27, 1974. In the interview, Arnold discusses her work at a beauty salon in the Women’s Prison. She explains the scheduling of classes, testing, and working with inmates.

Biographical Note

Mildred Arnold was born in Boonville, Warrick County, Indiana around 1920. She was one of eight children born to Forest and Lula Cannon Arnold. She graduated from high school in 1938 and continued her education at the DeVry’s Beauty School in Evansville, Indiana. Upon completion of her coursework, she moved to New York, where she attended hair styling school at Mr. Leon’s College. For the next twenty years, she owned her own beauty salon. She became a state investigator for the State Beauty Board, and was responsible for investigating schools, salons, licenses and student/teacher examinations. In 1970, she became an instructor at the Women’s Prison Beauty School. Arnold died October 16, 1992 in Owensboro, Kentucky.
