Biographical Note
Norma Marie Mueller was born in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1905 to (Frederick) Eugene (1856-1945) and Ottilie Elizabeth (Sondermann) Mueller (1872-1958). She had an older brother named Frederick Eugene (ca. 1903-1931). Her family were of German descent and her mother immigrated to the United States in 1881, while her father, the son of German immigrants, was born in Louisiana. Her father Eugene Mueller taught German and later, history, at Shortridge High School for 48 years before retiring in 1933. He continued to teach night classes at the Normal College of American Gymnastic Union for several more years. Her mother also worked as a teacher for 8 years, before Norma's birth. The family lived at 1156 Churchman Avenue in Indianapolis, Indiana for decades.
After high school, Norma Mueller studied music, piano and violin. She later became a successful music teacher, especially of piano and violin. Mueller frequently travelled to Europe for music festivals and to study piano and violin. She met her future husband, Fritz Moser, a government lawyer from Bern, Switzerland in 1936 on an ocean liner on the way back to New York. In 1937, she went to Switzerland and they were engaged. Their wedding was delayed due to illness in their families and the outbreak of World War II; they were not married until June 1949, after which the couple lived in Bern. Her mother moved to Bern to live with her and her husband 9 years before her death on October 29, 1958. Norma Mueller Moser died there in 1987.
