Biographical Note

Richard "Red" Skelton was born July 18, 1913 in Vincennes, Indiana. His father was a former Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus clown and died a few months before his son was born. The family struggled financially and Red began selling newspapers when just a young boy to help out. He got his first taste of show business when the actor and comedian Ed Wynn noticed him selling papers in front of the Pantheon Theatre in Vincennes and invited Red to his show. By the age of 15, he was on the road performing in medicine shows, vaudeville, burlesque, and circuses. He went on to star in movies, radio, and on his television program, The Red Skelton Show. He was a gifted comedian and some of his best known and beloved characters were "Freddie the Freeloader," "Clem Kadiddlehopper," and "Sheriff Deadeye." He passed away on September 17, 1997 and is buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Glendale, California.
