This collection includes photocopies of autographed, signed and typed letters from John William Summers in Washington, D.C.; Mary C. Hill in Valeene, Indiana; John Russell and Hazel Stone in Indiana; Washington, D.C. and Dallas, Texas; George G. and Vada M. Summers and Meda Windell in Louisville, Kentucky and Miami, Florida; and Benjamin Eugene Burgess in the Philippines and Japan; ranging from circa 1902-1946 regarding family matters and military service during World War II.

Biographical Note

Benjamin Eugene Burgess was born in Washington County, Indiana to Lawrence and Elsie [Elsa] F. Radcliff Burgess on October 8, 1920. He had three younger sisters; Dorothy F., Mary F., and Annibel [Annabel] Lee. His wife, Helen Frances (Rutherford) Burgess was born July 25,1922 to Charles [Charley] and Carrie Jackson Rutherford in Indiana and was the thrid of four children. He enlisted on December 6, 1944 in Indianapolis, Indiana and served as a private in the Military Police in the Philippines and in the Army of the Occupation of Japan, until September 1946 and was released from service November 29, 1946. Helen served in the United States Cadet Nurse Corps from January 21, 1945 through October 5, 1946. Helen died April 24, 1973 and is buried in the Livonia Cemetery in Livonia, Washington County, Indiana. Eugene died Apr. 18, 1997 and is also buried in the Livonia Cemetery.

Biographical Note

Claudius L. Stone was born to John S. and Mary C. Bates Stone in 1871 in Indiana. He was the younger of two sons, Clarence E. being one year older. He married Ada Alice Summers on March 26, 1895 in Orange County, Indiana. They had one son, John Russell Stone. He operated the C. L. Stone General Store in Livonia in the 1920s. Claude died in 1960 and is buried in the Livonia Cemetery, in Livonia, Indiana.

Biographical Note

Ada Alice (Summers) Stone was born in Valeene, Orange County, Indiana 1874 to James Monroe and Sarah J. Summers, the sister of John William and Albert Summers, both physicians. She married Claudius L. Stone on March 26, 1895 in Orange County, Indiana. They had one son, John Russell Stone.

Biographical Note

John Russell Stone was born in 1896 to Claudius L. and Ada A. Summers Stone in Indiana. He married Hazel when he was 21. He worked as a clerk for Stone and Summers when he registered for the draft in WWI and worked as a carrier for the House of Representatives Post Office from 1927 though at least 1930, which post he may have obtained through his uncle, John William Summers. He and Hazel were living in Dallas, Texas in 1934 and they operated Luby's Cafeteria No. 2 and No. 3 in Dallas, Texas for a period of time, including the 1940s. He died December 5, 1950 in Dallas County, Texas.

Biographical Note

Hazel M. Luby Stone was born February 27, 1895 to Joseph E. and Rose Purkiser Luby in Gays, Illinois. She was one of six children. She married John Russell Stone in her early 20s. They lived in Dallas, Texas in 1934 and operated Luby's Cafeteria No. 2 and No. 3 in Dallas, Texas for a period of time, including the 1940s. She died April 5, 1957 in Harlingen, Texas and is buried in the Dodge Grove Cemetery in Mattoon, Illinois.

Biographical Note

Mary C. (Bates) Stone Hill was born in Indiana to Caleb and Charlotte Bates in 1851 or 1852. She is the sister of George A. and William T. Bates, the mother of Claude Stone and grandmother of John Russell Stone. She was married to John S. Stone September 24, 1868 in Orange County, Indiana, and they had two children, Clarence E. and Claudius L. Stone. Her first husband, John S. Stone, died in 1881 and was buried in Bluff Springs Cemetery, Valeene, Indiana. She married William J. Hill (born in 1844 or 1845) on September 2, 1888 in Orange County, Indiana. He died in 1933 and is buried in Bluff Springs Cemetery, Valeene, Indiana. Mary died in 1939 and is buried in Bluff Springs Cemetery, Valeene, Indiana.

Biographical Note

George G. Summers was born to James M. and Sarah J. Summers in 1866 or 1867 in Indiana and had five siblings, including Ada (Summers) Stone, John William Summers and Albert T. Summers. He married Vada M. Windell, whose sister was Meda Windell, on December 6, 1892 in Harrison County, Indiana. George was the manager of Superior Oil Company in Wichita Falls, Texas from 1922 though 1925. They lived in New Albany, Indiana in the 1930. George died in 1934 and is buried in Fairview Cemetery, New Albany, Indiana.

Nevada "Vada" M. Windell Summers was born to George Washington and Harriet E. Conrad Windell January 1868 in Indiana and had one sibling, Orla M. "Meda" Windell. She married George G. Summers on December 6, 1892 in Harrison County, Indiana. She died in Detroit, Michigan on March 6, 1947 and is buried in Fairview Cemetery, New Albany, Indiana.

Biographical Note

Meda Windell Houghland was born to George Washington and Harriet E. Conrad Windell October 2, 1874 in Indiana and had one sibling, Nevada "Vada" M. Windell. George G. and Vada Summers lived with Meda and her parents in 1900; she and her husband, George W. Houghland, (born January 11, 1875) lived with with the Summers and her father in 1910, and she and her husband lived with the Summers in 1930. She died July 13, 1945 and is buried in the Fairview Cemetery, New Albany, Indiana.

Biographical Note

John William Summers was born to James Monroe and Sarah J. (Tower) Summers in Valeene, Orange County, Indiana on April 29, 1870. He was the third of five children, including Charles D. George G. (who married Vada M. Winchell), Ada A. ( who married Claudius L. Stone), and Albert T. (who also became a doctor). Summers received a medical degree from the Kentucky School of Medicine at Louisville in 1892 and pursued postgraduate studies at the Louisville Medical College, as well as in New York, London, Berlin, and at the University of Vienna, Austria. He married Virginia [Jennie] Bosworth Burks in 1897. He settled in Walla Walla, Washington and was elected to the Washington House of Representatives in 1917 and as a Republican member of the U.S. Congress from 1919 to 1932. Summers was also a member of the Sons of the American Revolution. He died Sept. 25, 1937 and is buried in Mountain View Cemetery, Walla Walla, Washington. Jennie died October 20, 1956 and is buried with her husband. They are survived by a daughter, Sarah Hope Summers Witherall (Mrs. James) (an actress) and a son, A. Burks Summers.
