Biographical Note

Gilmore Jordan was born in 1824 in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. He, with his family, relocated to Indianapolis circa 1836. He married Harriet McLaughlin, and the couple had several children, one of which became the prominent Indianapolis business leader, Arthur Jordan. Gilmore Jordan enlisted at the age of twenty-one to serve in the Mexican War. Later, he worked for the federal government in Washington, D.C. When the Civil War began, he enlisted in the Union Army of the Potomac. Following the war, he returned to government service in Washington, D.C. After some time there, the family returned to Indianapolis, where Jordan died in February of 1897.
