Biographical Note

John Allen Saunders was born in Lebanon, Indiana on March 24, 1899, the son of Fred Clark and Nancy Ellen (Jackson) Saunders. He attended Wabash College, where he received his A.B. degree in 1920 and his A.M. in 1922. Saunders continued graduate studies at the University of Chicago and the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. Saunders taught French and other Romance languages at Wabash College from 1920 to 1927. He married Lois Long on March 27, 1923 and they had 4 children: John Philip, David Allen, Penelope, and Lois Anne.

In his spare time, Saunders wrote plays for amateur theatrical groups, did free-lance writing of detective pulp fiction (1926-1936) and started cartooning. In 1927, he joined the editorial staff of the Toledo News-Bee, where he worked as books and theatre editor. In 1935, Saunders entered the comic strip field with Elmer Woggon. Four years later, Saunders took over the writing phase of Mary Worth, drawn by Ken Ernest. Saunders became a writer with the Chicago News Syndicate in 1936 under the name Steve Roper. He died on January 24, 1986.
