Biographical / Historical
The Indiana State Library and Historical Building was designed by local architects, Pierre and Wright. Construction of the Classical Revival-style building began in 1932 at 140 North Senate Avenue across from the Indiana Statehouse in Indianapolis. It was completed in 1934, with an Art Deco interior, housing the Indiana State Library, Indiana State Archives, Indiana Historical Bureau, and Indiana Historical Society. The building was renovated and expanded multiple times and eventually the historical society and archives sought buildings of their own as the collections and missions of each organization grew and evolved. The library's main entrance is now on Ohio Street.
