Scope and Contents

The collection consists of correspondence, notes, articles, and other materials from Arcada Balz ranging from 1928 to 1959, relating to the following organizations: the Indiana Federation of Women’s Cubs, New Harmony Memorial Commission, and the Fauntleroy House (1934–1964). The collection also contains papers relating to her work in the Indiana Senate, family correspondence, and her genealogical research. There is also a paper on the Edworthalean Society, a woman’s club in Bloomington, Monroe County, Indiana.

Biographical Note

Arcada Balz, born ca. 1880, was active in the Indiana Federation of Women’s Clubs, where she served as president (1935–1937). Balz was also president of the New Harmony Memorial Commission (1939–1950s). Aside from her organizational work, she was involved in politics. Balz was elected as a Republican to the Indiana Senate, where she served from 1943 to 1950. Shez was married to Frederick C. Balz, owner of the Star Millinery Company in Indianapolis, Indiana. Balz died in 1973.
