Scope and Contents

From the Collection: This collection contains correspondence and various documents of the Farley family ranging from 1861 to 1966, including birth certificates and marriage certificates, school report cards, school work, and invitations and programs from Washington, D.C. social and political events. Other items include a photographic image of a certificate of appointment of Thomas Davey as second lieutenant of the Bedford County (Pennsylvania) militia dated December 10, 1777; a certificate discharging L.S. Davis of Lorain County, Ohio from service as one of the "Squirrel Hunters," men who went to Ohio's southern border to defend against invasion during the Civil War, dated March 4, 1863 and signed by Ohio Governor David Tod; a copy of the January 1942 edition of Club Dial containing an article written by Nancy Farley, granddaughter of James I. Farley; a photograph of Mary Iliff at 12 years old in Petoskey, Michigan; and a photograph of Robert Land, Jr. circa 1937.

The collection's oversize folder (OBC236) contains a copy of the January 8, 1831 edition of the Richmond Palladium; Mary Iliff's June 2, 1916 high school diploma; an invitation to the July 4, 1929 Gaar family reunion held in Richmond, Indiana and a photograph of approximately 200 descendants of the Gaar family who attended; and a panoramic photograph of the Indiana University Alumni Association of Washington, D.C. reception and banquet held at the Kennedy-Warren on February 3, 1940.
