Scope and Contents

From the Collection: This collection contains items from Fred Dillard’s service during World War I, including a New Testament Bible given to him by the Orange County Red Cross, a copy of the songbook Songs the Soldiers and Sailors Sing , the booklet Management of the American Soldier by Major General David C. Shanks, photographs and a roster of commissioned and non-commissioned officers of the Evacuation Hospital #29, and French and German postcards (1918-1919). Other items include Fred’s teacher’s licenses and contracts (1914-1949), a photograph of his 1932 French Lick 5th grade class, his reminiscences about Hall Ridge and other stories regarding communities displaced by the building of the Patoka Reservoir (1971 and undated), correspondence and documents regarding the Dillard and Moery families (1969-1970, undated), and four small note cards written in German (1850) with a page of English translations.

This collection also contains school and military service records of Max Dillard (1938-1948), family correspondence during World War II (1942-1945), family ration books (1943-1945), Jacob and Sarah Painter’s deeds, tax receipts, and estate documents (1877-1935), and tax receipts of Benjamin and Sarah Carroll (1868-1892), and Fred Dillard (1921-1969). Fred Dillard's scrapbook (V043) contains photographs, certificates, correspondence, and newspaper clippings regarding the family's school activities, military service, and careers (1900-1971).
