Scope and Contents
From the Collection:
The collection primarily consists of James DuShane’s correspondence, particularly from 1890 to 1914, regarding interests in South Bend area power companies and oil investments in Kansas and Indiana (Jay, Adams, and Delaware counties). The collection also contains correspondence relating to his work as a patent attorney, time spent as a superintendent at Madison, Indiana, and personal family papers. Additionally, the collection includes the legal papers of Ellen Colfax, widow of Schuyler Colfax, letters of Spanish-American War soldier William H. Hobbs, and documents of Horatio Chapin with a scrapbook on the Chapin family history.
In addition to the papers, the collection contains 24 volumes (V047). The volumes mainly consist of account or letter-books relating to DuShane’s business, superintendent work, and personal accounts. There is also an oversize number chart dated 1888 (OBD004).
Correspondents include Abraham Lincoln Brick, Frederick P. Delefield, Charles W. Fairbanks, Charles W. Miller, Charles Tennery, among others.
