From the Collection:
The collection consists of Edward A. Mitchell's congressional papers (1946-1949), including correspondence regarding veterans' claims and benefits, and papers relating to Mitchell's service on the U.S. House of Representatives Veterans Committee; correspondence and legislative papers regarding bills introduced or supported by Mitchell, including the Taft-Hartley Act, the elimination of the tax on oleomargarine, the abolition of the War Assets Administration, and changes in the Chinese Immigration Law; his correspondence with constituents concerning the work of federal agencies, including complaints, and requests for information and assistance; constituent correspondence regarding current events and legislation before Congress; his speeches in Congress and before civic and political groups; press releases and other publicity issued by his office; papers relating to his 1946 and 1948 Congressional campaigns; papers relating to his work as an anti-communist; and correspondence regarding his resignation from the Jewish Congressional Advisory Board (1947). Also included are papers relating to the 1947 Evansville mayoral election. Correspondents include Omar N. Braldey, Homer Capehart, Charles A. Halleck, and Joseph McCarthy.
