Scope and Contents

This collection contains papers and materials related to James P. Fadely career as a history teacher and college counselor in central Indiana.
The first series relates to his time teaching history at secondary school at St. Richard's Episcopal School in Indiana and private schools in Georgia. The collection includes all of his lesson plans, class handouts, tests, essay prompts, and his personal notes as well as the history textbook, Rise of the American Nations, used by Dr. Fadely at the Savannah Country Day School. This series also contains materials related to the annual eighth grade trip to Washington D.C., the eighth grade research paper, student evaluations for U.S. History class, and Foundation meeting minutes, correspondence, reports, and programs for events occurring at the school.
Most of the papers relate to the planning and founding of University High School, a private, non-sectarian college preparatory school in Carmel, Indiana. The school opened in the fall of 2000 with Fadely serving initially as the director of marketing and public relations before transitioning to serve as the director of college counseling. Faculty meeting minutes, administrative committee minutes, and various studies and accreditation materials provide an insight into how a private school functions. The collection also contains a nearly complete run of The Thursday Times, the weekly faculty newsletter, several years of the Parent Association newsletter, and a few editions of the infrequently published student newspaper. Fadely also wrote a draft of a 10-year history of the school, which quotations from several founding board members and staff.
His personal papers include correspondence with University alumni and information regarding his membership with the Indiana Association for College Admission Counseling (IACAC) and the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) as well as the various committees he served on. Also included are files from the Independent Schools Association of the Central States (ISACS) visiting teams, which provide snapshots of the schools being evaluated: LeMans Academy (1990), The Orchard School (1992), The Avery Coonley School (2000), and a feasibility study team for Providence Cristo Rey High School (2006).
The collection also contains a thirty second televisions commercial (VHS) for University High School produced by Ben Rose.
