The collection consists principally of Samuel Merrill’s Civil War papers, including his letters to his wife and sister in Indianapolis from Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, and South Carolina (1862-1865). This collection contains a handwritten narrative by Susan M. Ketcham regarding her grandfather, Samuel Merrill, and her mother, Jane Merrill, circa March 15, 1925. Along with brief biographical information, Ketcham relates her mother's story about traveling with her father when he moved the state treasury from Corydon to Indianapolis and she also describes how Mr. Merrill traveled around the state as a bank examiner.
