Scope and Contents The collection consists of a note from Birch Bayh, Jr. to Mr. and Mrs. George Nelson of Valparaiso, Indiana, in appreciation of condolences expressed at the death of Birch Evans Bayh, Sr. The letter of Birch Bayh, Jr. is on letterhead stationary of the United States Senate. This letter accompanies an “In Memoriam” statement which quotes William Cullen Bryant’s poem “Thanatopsis”. An envelope, postmarked September 17, 1971, provides a date for the collection.
