Scope and Contents
This collection contains three documents regarding a dispute over 1,016 pounds of crop tobacco between Elizabeth Philpott and Hugh Mitchell from Charles County, Maryland (1752-1754); a settlement document for the closing of Ross Smiley's business (May 29, 1820); a letter sent to John Philpott of Fayette County, Indiana from Richard A. Buckner of Greensburg, Kentucky inquiring if Philpott would like him to represent him in determining if he's entitled to part of the proceeds from an estate of a man named Philpott in England who had left "a considerable sum of money to be divided between three families in the United States" (October 8, 1837); a partial document of a quit claim deed from John and Louisa Ludlow regarding their share of the estate of John Philpott (February 2, 1844); and a memorandum of Charles P. Taylor's with his family genealogical background and his request about a bequest (undated). The collection also includes a clipping of the column, "About Our Ancestors" by Eleanor Lexington that relates the history of the Ludlow family (1909).

Biographical Note
Charles Philpott and Elizabeth Philpott came to America from Gloucester, England in 1730 and settled in Charles County, Maryland. They had five children: John, Barton, William, Eleanor, and Elizabeth. Eleanor married James Taylor and they had a son named Charles Philpott Taylor.
William Philpott's son, John, had a daughter named Louisa (1810-1868) and she married John Ludlow (1800-1881). Louisa was a native of South Carolina and moved with her father to Indiana when it was still a territory. John moved to Fayette County, Indiana from Clermont County, Ohio in 1826. They had four children, including their son Henry Lewis (1838-1881).
Henry Lewis married Isabella Smiley Clemens (1833-1917), the daughter of Ross Smiley, in 1864. Ross Smiley came to Fayette County from Hamilton County, Ohio in 1830. John and Louisa had five children, including Ross S. (1867-1955) and Louis L. (1873-1950), a newspaper reporter and United States Representative from Indiana's Seventh District.
